Beginning in Marrakech and ending in Fes, we will go into the desert to the famous dunes of Merzouga, before turning towards Fes and visiting generally obscure towns of Azrou, Midelt, Errachidia.
Marrakech to Fes desert tour with a camel trek and an overnight stay in a desert camp located in the middle of Erg Chebbi dunes is the best way to combine the two imperial cities of Marrakech and Fes. This trip can be accomplished in 3, 4 or even 5 days for those of you who do want to take full advantage of their Morocco desert tour before and avoid long hours drive, especially between Erg Chebbi and Fes.
Day 1: Marrakech – Boumalne Dades ( 6 hours drive )
Meet your driver/guide at your hotel or riad, and start your journey with a panoramic drive over the Haouz planes east of Marrakech towards the High Atlas Mountains.
Cross the High Atlas Mountains driving past adobe Berber villages
Upon arrival at the village of Ait Ben Haddou, visit the UNESCO world heritage Kasbah famous for being used as a set for various Hollywood epics and fashion magazines photo shoots
After lunch at a local cafe, continue to Ouarzazate. Optional visit to the Atlas film studios before you continue to the oasis of Skoura
Visit the famous well-preserved Kasbah of Amridil to learn about the oases inhabitants’ way of life, Kasbahs architecture, irrigation techniques, and costumes.
Drive past the Valley of the roses, where you will have the opportunity to visit a local ladies’ artisanal Damascus Roses water distilling workshop.
Cross the road of 1001 Kasbahs where you will admire the ruins of hundreds of Kasbahs. Among the very few are restored and turned into guests houses.
Arrive at Dades Valley late in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at your guesthouse.
Day 2: Boumalne Dades – Merzouga ( 5 hours drive )
After breakfast, meet your driver to continue tour journey to the village of Tinghir, famous for its large Jewish community over the past until the 1960s, when the local jews immigrated to Israel.
Visit the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, now famous for its silver jewellery craftsmen.
Continue to the oasis of Todgha where you will enjoy an hour walk along the stream before you arrive at the majestic canyons.
After some time at leisure and lunch at a local cafe, continue to Rissani, the last major town before reaching Erg Chebbi dunes.
Upon arrival at Merzouga, meet your camel caravan at the end the road for a ride over the colour changing sand dunes while admiring the sunset on your way to your Sahara desert camp.
After settling at your Bedouin desert camp, enjoy a Moroccan dinner under the stars while your camp hosts entertain you with their Tamtam drums around the campfire.
Day 3: Merzouga – Fes ( 7 hours drive )
After breakfast and a sunrise watch, ride your camels back to Merzouga village where you will meet your driver.
Drive to Errachidia, the main town in the area, where you might want to enjoy a cup of black coffee before you cross the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas Mountains to the Berber town of Midelt. Lunch will be served here at a local cafe.
For those of you who can’t stand long hours driving, there is a possibility to spend the night in Midelt and continue to Fes the following day.
After lunch, enjoy a scenic drive over the cedar forests and snow-capped mountains in winter seasons to Azrou and Ifran. Be ready to meet same Barbary apes on the way.
