Fes to Marrakech desert tour:
There is no better way to visit the two imperial cities of Fes and Marrakech than combining it with a visit of Morocco Sahara desert. A Fes to Marrakech desert tour is possible in 3, 4 or even 5 days depending on your time table and the areas of Moroccan Sahara desert you wish to explore, as well as distances to be driven each day.
Day 1: Fes – Merzouga ( 7 hours drive )
After an early breakfast, meet your driver / guide at your riad / hotel to start your Fes to Marrakech desert tour with a drive across the Saiss Planes to Ifran and Azrou, both located in the Middle Atlas Mountains and famous for being a ski resort, and a winter / spring holiday resorts for the locals.
Continue through the cedar forests to Midelt, A Berber town located in the heart of the Middle Atlas Mountains, where you will stop for lunch before you continue your journey driving along Ziz Valley to Errachidia, one of the major cities in Morocco’s Sahara desert.
From here you will continue to Rissani, considered a holy town for the Moroccans, as it is the birthplace of Alaouites dynasty ruling Morocco until today.
After a short stop, continue to Merzouga where your camel caravan is waiting for you.
Ride your camels over Erg Chebbi dunes to admire a color-changing sunset on the way to your Sahara desert camp.
After you’re settled in your private tent, a Moroccan dinner will served under the stars next to the camp fire enjoying the local nomads playing Tam-tam drums.
PS: For those who can’t stand 8 hours drive, there is a possibility to spend the night in Midelt and continue to Erg Chebbi the following day.
Day 2: Merzouga – Boumalne Dades ( 5 hours drive )
After an early wake up to admire the sunrise, and breakfast, start today’s adventure with a drive to Rissani, where you can visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, the founder of the Alaouites Dynasty, and maybe the famous dates market before you continue to Tinghir, one of the Sahara desert oases that hosted an interesting Jewish community until the 1960s. Join a local guide for a visit of the Mellah ( the old Jewish quarter ), and continue to the oasis of Todgha, where you will enjoy an hour walk along the stream, watching local Berbers working on their fields and ladies doing their laundry on the river banks.
Continue to the majestic Todra Gorges where you will have some time at leisure and maybe enjoy lunch at a local cafe.
In the afternoon, you will continue your journey to Dades Valley. Dinner and overnight at a local guesthouse.
Day 3: Boumalne Dades – Kasbah Ait Ben Hadou – Marrakech ( 6 hours drive )
After breakfast, start today’s journey with a drive across the road of 1001 Kasbahs to Kelaa Mgouna, famous for its Damascus roses cultivation. In spring season, you will have the opportunity to visit a local ladies’ artisanal rose water distilling workshop.
From here, you will continue to the famous oasis of Skoura, where you will visit the well preserved Kasbah of Amridil to learn about the Kasbahs architecture, Sahara desert oases life style, irrigation techniques, and costumes.
Proceed to Ouarzazate where you might want to visit the famous Atlas Studios after lunch at a local cafe.
the Famous UNESCO world heritage village of Ait Ben Haddou is only a short drive away. Visit the fortified Kasbah before you continue to Marrakech crossing the High Atlas Mountains and Tizi N Tichka pass.
Arrive at Marrakech early evening, and your Fes to Marrakech desert tour journey will come to an end with a drop off at your hotel or riad.
